2. Pious (adjective)
- "All of them-- i held them personally and individually responsible-- the polyestered Kiwanis boys, the merchants and farmers, the pious churchgoers, the chatty houswives.." (pg#45)
- Example; churchgoers are an example of being deeply religious.
- Being pious, Alan decided to commit to the ministry for the rest of his life.
3. Vigil (noun)
- "I'll never be certain, of course, but i think he meant to bring me up against my realities, to guide me across the river and to take me to the edge and to stand a kind of vigil as i chose a life for myself." (pg#56)
- Example; "as i chose a life for myself", he was given time to contemplate what he wanted to do.
- During his dog's post surgery, he remained vigil.
